Narrative of the early life of a southern Wisconsin settler in the middle of the nineteenth century.

Description

Raised on a farm near Mineral Point, Wisconsin in the 1830s, John Parkinson lived in the Midwest until trekking to California in 1860. This database, written in 1920, is a collection of reminiscences of his life in the state. It contains descriptions of his childhood, particularly life on a farm, and agricultural practices. Additionally, it provides commentary on the Black Hawk War and its effect on relations with the Native American population of the area. For researchers of early Wisconsin history, this narrative can provide a personalized picture of life in the early Midwest.
