Description
In 1857, Andrew Davis was a member of an expedition to survey a planned rail line from Portage, Wisconsin to Lake Pepin. This database, compiled from his journal entries and originally published in 1911, is a narrative of the expedition from his perspective. It traces the company's journey from Silver Lake, through Marquette, Waushara, Adams, Wood, Clark, Eau Clarire, Chippewa, and Dunn Counties. Beginning in March, the journey lasted until August when the team reconnoitered the headwaters of the Red Cedar River. In addition to providing descriptions of the landscape and terrain, it includes commentary on the expedition's mishaps and living conditions. For researchers of early Wisconsin, this database affords a valuable look into the topography and flora of the area.
