Maurice Farrar, Five Years in Minnesota
Narrative of the life of Maurice Farrar, an English promotion agent
Description
Maurice Farrar was an Englishman authorized in 1880 by the state of Minnesota to act as a promotion agent. He spent five years in Minnesota during the late 1870s and, upon returning to Great Britain, published a promotional work extolling the farming life in the Midwest. This database is a transcription of that work. He describes the farming center of Fairmont, in Martin County, the wooded area of Fillmore County, and the town of Chatfield. Additionally, he provides a description of his visit to a Chippewa reservation, White Earth. For those researchers trying to understand the larger culture in which Minnesota ancestors may have lived, this can be a helpful database.
