Lucius Fairchild, California Letters, 1849-55
Collection of letters written by a young prospector during the California Gold Rush
Description
With the discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill, California became the destination of choice in the 1850's for thousands of men and women seeking a piece of the gold rush. This database, another in a series provided by the Library of Congress, is a collection of letters written by one young prospector. Lucius Fairchild came to the state 1849, before his seventeenth birthday, and left before turning twenty-five. His letters illuminate the grueling and often exciting conditions in which miners lived during the early years of the rush. Intended to help researchers understand the broader culture in which their ancestors lived, this work can be helpful to those with Californian ancestors.
